Australia Uses Navy to Turn Back Asylum Seekers
During his candidacy, Australia's new Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, promised to use the Australian Navy to turn back asylum seekers from Indonesia.
The program would include using the Australian Navy to forcibly turn boats around, and purchasing boats before they could be used as smuggling ships.
Now that he's been elected, the Coalition led government has instituted Abbott's plans.
The Coalition government has changed policy so that the number of asylum seekers prevented from arriving in Australia are no longer reported to the public.
During Kevin Rudd's tenure as Prime Minister, policy was changed so that asylum seekers would be sent to Papua New Guinea.
