The US Attacked ISIS in Afghanistan with the Massive Ordinance Air Blast Bomb
The US dropped the Massive Ordinance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB - GBU-43/B) in Afghanistan targeting a tunnel complex in use by ISIS.
It is the first time that the weapon was used in combat.
The MOAB is the 2nd largest non-nuclear weapon in the arsenal of the US; it has an explosive yield of 11 tons of TNT.
The MOAB is over 30 feet long, and weighs over 21,000 pounds, and is covered in a thin aluminum skin. The aluminum skin was chosen so that the casing of the bomb would not interfere with the blast.
The MOAB was developed for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The US has been fighting in Afghanistan for over 15 years; according to the US government top watchdog on Afghanistan, the Afghan government controls less than 60 percent of the country.
